Omari | Studio Portrait Session | Atlanta

I ran into Target to get a few things and immediately got distracted by the Dollar Zone at the entrance. I spotted some stencils, and as I took a closer look a young guy popped up near me, looking at the same thing. I made some comment about finding great art supplies, which led to a conversation about us both being artists- I, a photographer; he, a dancer and choreographer. His name was Omari, and as we continued to chat, we exchanged Instagram handles and began making plans to collaborate. Dance photography is one of my core passions; before moving to Germany, I did it a lot, and it always filled my heart with such joy, love, and passion as I’d never felt before. This was a golden connection.

We met a few weeks later at a friend’s studio, where we made magic based on some story and mood boards we’d created prior. Turns out it was Omari’s first professional photoshoot. We talked and listened and created work we were both excited about. We made movement images and portraiture work together.

The only way to describe it is to say that this session was magical for both of us. It’s so hard to put into words what this session did for him and me, but I think the images speak for themselves; they’re powerful, authentic, and show his confidence and humanity. I hope others who view the work see that in him.

This is what he sent me when he saw what we’d made together:

“OMG I’M CRYING YOU BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER!!! Thank you so much, this means the world to me.Omg I could cry!! Bobbi Jo thank you so much!! I appreciate everything you have done to help me and push me and especially create an amazing vision for me. Thanks for making me feel so beautiful and comfortable in my own[, while] giving me wise words to be a creative black male. You are an amazing soul.”

I am so glad I connected with Omari in Target that day. This shoot was meant to empower and encourage him. He has great plans. He’s going to take the world by storm, so watch out. I look forward to future collaborations like this!
